Interview with Garrett Gibbons, visual storyteller and master of the music video

Garrett Gibbons describes himself as a visual storyteller. He’s actually an autodidact jack of all trades in the direction and production of film of all kinds. According to his bio, he has worked with clients from Sony Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Island Def Jam Motown Music Group, and musicians from around the world. He has also worked with LDS musicians Colby Miller and Alma Sanjo. Garrett lent us some time to answer a few questions about Seattle-based Indie hip hop, the blending of dance, video, and music, and of course, Justin Bieber.

You’re a label mogul. Will you hire Colby Miller?

Colby Miller wants the internet to hire him to write, perform, record, produce, and release his next album. He’s using kickstarter to fund his next album and needs donations and preorders to make it just so. You could say that it’s a fair request since he has given away everything he’s ever recorded away for free: 2 EPs and a full-length LP last year, and various covers and demos this year. Or you could do what the business world does, and grill him for a while before giving him the job. Since it’s spring, I opted to grill. Because he is a gentleman and smart job seeker, Colby wore his interview-best.  Ladies and gentlemen of the hiring board: I give you Colby Miller. Continue Reading →

Colby Miller

Colby Miller is an enigmatic new face here at Linescratchers. He composes and records quiet, yet textured acoustic music around his home in San Bernadino, California, yet, despite the seemingly humble context of his origins, his music is startlingly ambitious, and will most definitely tickle the ears of music lovers who think they’ve heard it all. He has released one EP called When I Should Be Sleeping earlier this year, but readers will most likely be especially intrigued by his most recent project. He has released a pair of albums in the last day or two: an EP called Epimetheus, and a full-length album called Prometheus, based on the ancient Greek mythology surrounding the two sons of Iapetus. Like I said, it’s ambitious stuff. Colby has agreed to do an interview with us about his two albums, about the role of mythology and storytelling in our lives and faith, and his unique approach to songwriting. Continue Reading →
